India's first hydrogen-powered train to run on Haryana's Jind-Sonipat route
text_fieldsIndia is set to introduce its first hydrogen-powered train on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, with the Ministry of Railways directing Northern Railway to prepare for its launch.
The train will operate on the 89-km route under the Delhi Division of Northern Railway.
Developed by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the hydrogen-powered train recently completed its final trial run, which included safety assessments such as emergency braking distance and oscillation tests.
With the launch, India will join a small group of countries, including Germany, Sweden, Japan and China, that operate hydrogen-powered trains.
The train, numbered 74010, will depart Jind at 7.40 am and reach Sonipat at 9.40 am. The return service, train number 74009, will leave Sonipat at 10.40 am and arrive in Jind at 1 pm. The service will operate daily with a maximum speed of 75 kmph.
During the journey, the train will stop at Jind City, Pandu Pindara, Lalit Khera, Bhambeva, Ishapur Kheri, Butana, Khandrai, Gohana, Rabhra, Lath, Mohana, Haryana, and Barwasni.
According to the Railway Board, scheduled maintenance of the train will be carried out at the Shakurbasti depot in Delhi. The trainset will be moved between Jind and Shakurbasti by a locomotive when required for maintenance.
The train consists of 10 coaches, including two driving power cars rated at 1,200 kW each and eight passenger coaches, giving it a total power output of 2,400 kW. According to the Railways, it is currently the world's longest hydrogen-powered train on a broad gauge platform and the most powerful in its category.
Powered by hydrogen fuel, the train produces no carbon dioxide emissions, with water vapour being its only emission.
