India's caseload dips below 2 lakh for first time since mid-April

New Delhi: India recorded less than 2 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases on Monday for the first time in 40 days with 1,96,427 cases. The death toll too was the lowest in 27 days with 3,511 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours.
The active cases have further reduced to 25,86,782 comprising 9.60 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has improved to 89.26 per cent.
In another indication that the second wave of the pandemic in the country was now firmly on the wane, Covid cases fell for the second straight week ending Sunday, registering a steeper drop of 22% than in the previous seven days (16%).
With 34,867 cases reported in the past 24 hours, Tamil Nadu is leading the state list. Tamil Nadu was alone responsible for 17.75% of the new cases.
It is followed by Maharashtra with 22,122 new infections. Karnataka reported 25,311 cases, Kerala 17,821 and Andhra Pradesh 12,994 cases. The case count was 17,883 for West Bengal.
The six most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (5,579,897), Karnataka (2,424,904), Kerala (2,317,911), Tamil Nadu (1,806,861), Uttar Pradesh (1,670,020), and Andhra Pradesh (1,580,827).
The number of tests carried out in a day also stood above 20 lakh, the ICMR data says.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for global solidarity in the fight against the pandemic, saying that "Covid-19 cannot be beaten one country at a time".
