India directs Twitter to block 1,178 accounts in fresh notice

Official sources in the government have revealed that the Indian government is pushing for the removal of over a thousand accounts that are allegedly linked to the Pakistani and Khalistani accounts that are spreading propaganda around the ongoing farmer's protests.

The move comes after Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg had tweeted a "toolkit" in support of the farmer's protests which allegedly contained information that was intended to promote "digital strikes" through hashtags, tweetstorms and physical activity in the protests.

Police investigating the matter said that the toolkit was by the Canadian pro-Khalistani outfit, the Poetic Justice Foundation. The toolkit also contained an action plan for January 26, where violence broke out after a group of farmers diverted from the allowed route and started marching towards the Red Fort.

Union Minister for External Affairs S.Jaishankar said on Saturday that investigations were ongoing and that the MEA was justified in reacting to the statements of celebrities on such sensitive matters.

Greta later deleted the tweet after being appraised of the situation in India. Other world-famous celebrities including Rihanna had also expressed concern over the internet shutdown in parts of Delhi following the protests.
