India tops globally in COVID deaths: WHO

The World Health Organisation on Wednesday noted a 13 per cent decrease in new COVID-19 cases in the past week in India while adding that it is still the highest around the globe. India recorded 2,387,663 new cases last week.

According to the weekly epidemiological update data received by the WHO from national authorities as of May 16, in the past week, over 4.8 million new cases and about 86,000 new deaths were reported globally; this is a 12 and 5 per cent decrease from the previous week.

India is followed by Brazil with over four lack cases, the US with over 2 lakh cases, Argentina and Colombia with over a lakh new cases each.

The highest number of deaths were also reported in India, with 27,922 deaths, followed by Nepal recording 1,224 deaths and Indonesia with 1,125 deaths.

As per WHO data, India has about 24.68 cumulative cases and 270,284 deaths. Globally, the number of new cases are high despite the declining trend over the past three weeks.
