India records over 1.61 lakh Covid cases, 1,733 fatalities

India on Wednesday recorded 1.61 lakh news Covid cases in the last 24 hours, 3% lower than yesterday, as per the Union Health Ministry's latest update. The daily positivity rate has dropped to 9.26 per cent from 11.6 per cent, while the weekly positive rate is 14.15%. The 1,61,386 new Covid cases have pushed India's infection tally to 4,16,30,885.

As many as 1,733 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 4,97,975. A total of 2,81,109 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, which brings the total recoveries to 3,95,11,307 and the recovery rate now stands at 94.91%.

The top five states which have registered maximum cases are Kerala with 51,887 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with 16,096 cases, Maharashtra with 14,372 cases, Karnataka with 14,366 cases and Gujarat with 8,338 cases.

Around 65.1% of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Kerala alone accounting for 32.15% of the new cases.

India's active caseload currently stands at 16,21,603. The daily positivity rate has dropped to 9.26 per cent from 11.6 per cent, while the weekly positive rate is 14.15%.

In the ongoing Covid vaccination drive across the country, 167.21 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far. Over 75 per cent of the country's adult population is now fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

In the 15-18 age group, 4,71,44,423 first doses and 10,81,838 second doses have been administered.

India surpassed the one-crore mark in the number of cases on December 19, 2020. India crossed the grim milestone of two crores on May 4 and three crores on June 23 last year.
