India reports nearly 1.41 lakh new Covid-19 cases, Omicron tally rises to 3007

India on Friday reported a massive jump in its Covid-19 tally with 1,41,986 fresh cases, only a week after the country crossed the 10,000 mark.
Top five states which have registered maximum cases are Maharashtra with 40,925 cases, followed by West Bengal with 18,213 cases, Delhi with 17,335 cases, Tamil Nadu with 8,981 cases and Karnataka with 8,449 cases.
These five states account for 66.14 per cent of the new Covid-19 cases, with Maharashtra alone responsible for 28.82 per cent of the new Covid-19 cases.
The country last reported over one lakh cases on June 7 last year when 1,00,636 infections were recorded.
In the last 24 hours, 285 Covid-related deaths were reported in the country, increasing the total reported death count to 4,83,463.
Maximum casualties were reported in Kerala (189), followed by Maharashtra with 20 daily deaths.
The active cases comprise 1.34 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 97.30 per cent.
The daily positivity rate was recorded at 9.28 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 5.66 per cent, according to the ministry.
The virus is continuing to spread at an unprecedented pace in the country, largely driven by the Omicron variant now present in 27 states.
With a single-day jump of 64 Omicron cases, India now has 3,007 cases of the new variant of coronavirus. Omicron has been reported in 27 states, with the most cases in Maharashtra with 876 cases, followed by Delhi with 513 infections. Out of the total Omicron cases reported so far, 1,203 people have recovered or migrated.
India has administered a total of 90,59,360 doses of Covid-19 vaccine in the last 24 hours, which brings the total tally of doses administered to 1,50,61,92,903.
A total of 15,29,948 samples were tested for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.
Amid an ongoing resurgence across the world, the global coronavirus caseload has topped 302.6 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 5.47 million and vaccinations to over 9.37 billion, according to Johns Hopkins University.
In its latest update on Saturday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and the death toll stood at 302,679,314 and 5,478,980, respectively, while the total number of vaccine doses administered has increased to 9,373,736,128.
