India recorded 26,964 fresh Covid cases, which is 3.2 per cent higher than yesterday figures (26,115), taking the total count of COVID-19 cases to 3,35,31,498, while the active cases declined to 3,01,989, the lowest in 186 days, according to data.

The country reported 383 deaths in the country, taking the total death toll to 4,45,768.

Top five states which have registered maximum cases are Kerala with 15,768 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 3,131 cases, Tamil Nadu with 1,647 cases, Mizoram with 1,355 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 1,179 cases.

Around 85.6 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Kerala alone responsible for 58.48 per cent of the new cases.

Maximum casualties have been reported from Kerala with 214 daily deaths, followed by Maharashtra with 70 fresh fatalities.

India's recovery rate now stands at 97.77 per cent.

A total of 34,167 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, which brings the total recoveries to 3,27,83,741 across the country.

India's active caseload stands at 3,01,989. In the last 24 hours, active cases have declined by 7,586.

The R-value, or reproductive number, for COVID-19 in India dropped from 1.17 in August-end to 0.92 in mid-September, indicating that the spread of the infection across the country has slowed down, according to researchers. However, the R-values of some major cities, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, are over 1. The R-value of Delhi and Pune are below 1.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) has informed the Centre that it will be able to supply around 22 crore doses of Covishield in October as the Centre announced that the export of surplus Covid vaccines will resume in the coming fourth quarter under the "Vaccine Maitri" programme, official sources said.
