India records 8,309 new Covid cases, 236 fatalities

New Delhi: India reported 8,309 new COVID-19 cases and 236 related fatalities on Monday, pushing the overall case tally to 3,45,80,832 and the death count to 4,68,790, according to the Health Ministry bulletin.

Top five states which have registered maximum cases are Kerala with 4,350 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 832 cases, Tamil Nadu with 736 cases, West Bengal with 715 cases, and Karnataka with 315 cases. 83.62% of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Kerala alone responsible for 52.35% of the new cases.

Maximum deaths have been reported in Kerala (159), followed by Maharashtra(33).

During the same period, 9,905 recoveries were reported throughout the country. With this, the national recovery rate currently stands at 98.34 per cent, which is the highest since March 2020. The active cases in the country stood at 1,03,859 on Monday, the bulletin further showed.

New Covid variant, 'Omicron' which has been declared as a variant of concern by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has triggered global worry. The variant was first detected in South Africa earlier this month. Since then, the new strain has already been detected in several European countries . 'Omicron' is said to be much more infectious than the Delta variant.

The active caseload stands at 1,03,859. Active cases presently constitute 0.30 per cent of the country's total positive cases, the lowest since March 2020.

Meanwhile, the weekly positivity rate at 0.85 per cent has remained less than 1 per cent for the last 15 days now.

The daily positivity rate stands at 1.09 per cent, which has also remained below 2 per cent for the last 56 days and less than 3 per cent for 91 consecutive days now.

With the administration of 42,04,171 vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India's Covid inoculation coverage has reached 122.41 crore as of Monday morning.

This has been achieved through 1,26,81,072 sessions.

More than 24.61 crore balance and unutilized Covid Vaccine doses are still available with the states and UTs to be administered, according to the health ministry as of on Monday morning.
