India has strongly objected to Pakistan’s hospitality towards Zakir Naik, a fugitive preacher facing charges in India, questioning Islamabad’s decision to provide support to a wanted individual.

During a weekly press briefing on Friday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed concerns over Naik’s presence in Pakistan. He noted that this was not the first time Pakistan had hosted Naik, highlighting what it signifies about Pakistan’s stance on harboring individuals wanted for legal action in India.

"This reflects the approach of his hosts and their willingness to provide support to someone facing legal proceedings in India," Jaiswal stated.

According to a report by The Express Tribune on March 18, Naik recently met with former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz at their residence in Raiwind. The meeting reportedly covered various topics, though no official statement has been issued regarding their discussions.

The controversy surrounding Naik’s presence in Pakistan escalated further after former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Hafeez met with him last week. Hafeez shared photos of their meeting on social media, captioning it as a "pleasure" to meet Naik.

His post quickly sparked backlash, particularly from Indian social media users. Many criticised Hafeez for associating with a fugitive, with some suggesting that such interactions contribute to strained India-Pakistan relations. One user reportedly commented, "This is one of the reasons why the Indian cricket team and government hesitate to visit Pakistan."

Naik’s presence in Pakistan has also raised concerns among Christian leaders. On October 24, 2024, Reverend Azad Marshall, President Bishop of the Synod of the Church of Pakistan, wrote to Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari expressing concerns about Naik’s remarks on Christianity during his visit as a state guest.

Naik is currently wanted by Indian authorities on charges of money laundering and inciting extremism. His continued presence in Pakistan and high-profile meetings have only intensified diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
