Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu's visit to India marks a significant moment in bilateral relations, especially after tensions were strained due to controversial remarks made by three Maldivian ministers against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During his visit, President Muizzu sought a Rs 3,000 crore currency swap deal with India to aid the Maldives in overcoming its economic crisis.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri briefed the media about the talks between the two countries. When asked by a journalist about the renewed closeness between India and the Maldives, Misri responded with humor, saying, "Yaarana chalta rahega" (Friendship will continue).

He emphasized that the relationship between the two nations is longstanding and built on various pillars, including trade, economic development, people-to-people connections, and defence cooperation. He further explained that both nations are working together on numerous development projects that benefit both parties due to their geographical proximity and shared interests.

President Muizzu arrived in India on Sunday and was warmly received by Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi.

During a joint statement, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s commitment to its "neighbourhood first" policy, citing India’s assistance to the Maldives during emergencies, including providing Covid-19 vaccines and essential commodities. He also announced the virtual inauguration of Hanimaadhoo International Airport and the completion of several other projects, such as social housing units and a drinking water and sewerage system for 28 Maldivian islands.

A key point of the talks was the Maldives' role in ensuring the security of the Indian Ocean region, especially given concerns raised by some in India after Muizzu, seen as a pro-China leader, won last year's election on an "India out" platform. This platform included the request for India to withdraw 90 military personnel stationed in the Maldives to maintain aviation platforms provided by India for humanitarian and medical aid.

In response, India replaced military staff with technical personnel. Misri stressed that despite these changes, the relationship between India and the Maldives remains strong, with both countries committed to furthering their mutual interests and cooperation.
