Actor Imran Khan has asked the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to share the evidence used to consider cancelling his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.

He argued that he has not been given a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations against him.

In a representation dated October 22, Khan challenged a show-cause notice issued on October 17. The notice followed his detention by Mumbai Police at a protest site and directed him to leave India by October 28.

Khan said the notice referred to documents and a report submitted by Mumbai Police but did not provide copies of the material to him. He also described a statement attributed to him in the notice as “incomplete”.

He alleged that the police had not “even attempted to record his statement in connection with the registration of FIR”.

He said the reasons cited in the notice were “nebulous and contradictory” and argued that access to the documents was necessary to ensure a fair hearing.

“Your disclosure of requisitioned material shall not cause any prejudice to your office, but my failure to adequately respond to the SCN may result in cancellation of my OCI card,” he said.

Khan also urged the authorities to consider that he had lived in India for 42 years and built his life and family here.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday put the Leave India Notice on hold until November 2. The FRRO sought more time to respond and assured the court that Khan, a US citizen, would not be required to leave India by the original deadline.

The notice was issued after Khan attended a youth-led protest near Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan on October 10. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over irregularities in electoral rolls.

Khan has denied violating any rules. He said no protest was underway when he reached the spot and that he did not cross police barricades to enter the protest site. He also questioned the notice for failing to specify which rules he had violated.
