IIT Bombay cuts ties with Turkish universities

Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay reportedly decided to suspend its collaborations with universities in Turkey, aligning with the actions of several other major Indian educational institutions. The move comes in response to Turkey's perceived support for Pakistan, which has drawn significant criticism across India.
The backlash against Turkey intensified following reports that Pakistani forces used drones supplied by Turkish defence companies to carry out attacks on both civilian and military targets in India after Operation Sindoor.
Sources indicate that IIT Bombay cited the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Turkey as the reason for halting its academic partnerships. The institute is said to be reviewing and suspending these agreements until further notice, NDTV reported.
This decision follows similar actions taken recently by Delhi-based universities, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia, which also announced the suspension of ties with Turkish institutions.
Meanwhile, Indian tourists have reportedly begun cancelling travel plans to Turkey and Azerbaijan in protest against the two countries’ support for Pakistan.
Reports suggest that Turkey welcomed over 3 lakh Indian tourists in 2024, generating approximately Rs 42.9 billion in revenue. Azerbaijan also saw significant tourist activity from India, with more than 2 lakh visitors contributing around Rs 26 billion in earnings.
