'I genuinely served': MP of Sandeshkhali breaks silence
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Lok Sabha MP from Basirhat constituency, where Sandeshkhali is located, Nussrat Jahan, spoke on Sunday, finally breaking her silence in Sandeshkhali protests and related sexual harassment, extortion and grabbing allegations against Trinamool Congress leaders, NDTV reports.
Jahan said that she served her people genuinely, following party guidelines. She assured that the state's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, is taking all the necessary measures to ensure peace in the Sandeshkhali island.
The MP spoke on X, posting a picture of a paper cut-out which quoted the island's residents saying that she had forgotten them.
Her post read, "It is heart-wrenching waking up to such allegations. As a woman and as a public representative, I have always followed my party's guidelines and served the people. With the Sandeshkhali incident raging, Our Hon CM has already send Help.. and necessary steps are being taken for the welfare of the people. We are not above the law.. thus abiding by it and supporting the administration is what one needs to do. I have genuinely served the people in my constituency, in times of joy, in times of trouble.. I act in accordance with the guidelines of my party.. and I believe we must have faith in the state govt and administration, what is wrong shall always be condemned. We must refrain from targeting each other and come together to help create peace and not commotion. People's security and welfare is our top priority. Rest who says what about whom does not matter. Like I said before. I'd repeat again "STOP POLITICISING," she said.

The news report she posted quoted the residents that MP Jahan did not visit the island after she was elected and she was only being there during the election campaign ahead of the 2019 general elections. According to the islanders, the vehicle she used to tour the island belonged to Sheikh Shajahan, against who the protests are all about.
The report quotes the residents that though the MP never visited them, they travelled 40 km to watch her movies. The report claimed them saying that Jahan, who promised to visit the island but never kept it, failed to keep her word.
