‘Hopeful’ of removing AFSPA in 3-4 years: Amit Shah tells Nagaland

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said there has been 70 per cent dip in violence in the northeastern region.
Speaking at an election rally in Nagaland’s Tuensang town, Shah hinted at the possibility of lifting controversial Armed Forces ( Special Powers) Act, known by AFSPA.
He expressed hope of removing controversial act in the next ‘three-four years’, The Indian Express reported.
The state will go to polls on February 27, counting will take place on March 2.
Shan said issues related to the development and rights of eastern Nagaland will be addressed after the polls.
Saying that Naga peace talks are underway, Shah added that PM Modi’s initiative for peace in the region will come through.
Stressing on the decreasing violence, Shah said there is a 60 per cent fall in deaths of security forces and 83 per cent so in civilian death in the region under BJP regime.
Previously in April 2022 Shah announced revoking of AFSPA from many districts in Assam, Nagaland and Manipur.
Shah reportedly said that the withdrawal of the act resulted from the improved security situation and fast-paced development from ‘consistent efforts’ by the government to end insurgency, bringing lasting peace to the region.
