Jajpur/Odisha: A woman had given birth to a baby with male and female gonads, and her family has allegedly abandoned her and the newborn at a hospital in the Jajpur district of Odisha, PTI reported.

She said that her family asked her to give the child to an orphanage, but she refused. "After the doctor told us about it, my husband and in-laws asked me to leave the baby at an orphanage. They left us at the hospital. But I am the mother and will never abandon my child," she said

An official in the private hospital said that the woman was admitted on Sunday and delivered the same night. Though many plants and animals are hermaphrodites (having male and female sex organs) but it is scarce in humans, a doctor opined.

She added that her husband or in-laws did not visit the hospital again. Further, she said that she would consult doctors, take their advice and treat her child.

On Thursday, an association of the trans community visited the baby and mother at the hospital. "I appeal to the family members to accept the baby and raise it with love and affection. The baby should not suffer like us," said Kajal Nayak, president of the Jajpur Transgender Association. The association later visited the district collector and requested to take action.

Meanwhile, District Collector Chakravarti Singh Rathore directed the Child Welfare Committee to find a solution. However, the woman's husband couldn't be contacted.
