G7 countries invited to invest in clean energy tech in India: PM Modi

NEW DELHI: India makes up 17% of the world's population, but only 5% of total global carbon emissions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Schloss Elmau, Germany. "The main reason behind this is our lifestyle, which is based on the theory of co-existence with nature," he said.

The Prime Minister, at a session on climate, energy and health said that India's target of achieving 40% energy capacity from non-fossil sources was fulfilled nine years before time, the New Indian Express reported.

He issued invitations to the G-7 countries to invest in clean energy technologies in the country, saying that India has a good track record in tackling climate change. He added that these countries can invest in research, innovation, and manufacturing the same.

Following the invitation of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Modi attended the Summit and held talks with several leaders attending the summit. He was also able to hold discussions on methods to solidify India-EU cooperation in trade, investment, technology and climate action during his meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The G7 is an inter-governmental political group consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US. During his visit, the Prime Minister also held talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, French President Emmanuel Macron, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez and South African president Cyril Ramaphosa.
