Fresh cyclone threatens Andhra Pradesh, likely to make landfall on Nov 3
text_fieldsAmaravati: Andhra Pradesh is preparing for another powerful cyclone, with a severe storm developing over the Bay of Bengal expected to make landfall along the state's southern coast on November 3, days after Cyclone Arnab left a trail of destruction.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the weather system intensified into a deep depression on Sunday and was likely to develop into a cyclonic storm within six hours, followed by further strengthening into a severe cyclonic storm by November 2.
The system is forecast to cross the coast between Nellore and Narsapur by the morning of November 3, bringing winds of 100-110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph.
At 5.30 a.m. on Sunday, the deep depression was centred over the southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, around 700 km east-southeast of Chennai and 770 km from Visakhapatnam.
The fresh weather threat comes days after Cyclone Arnab struck near Narsapur on October 28, killing seven people and damaging crops, roads and power and telecommunications infrastructure across coastal districts.
Preliminary estimates put the damage caused by Arnab at Rs 4,600 crore. Thousands of acres of crops were affected, while numerous trees and electricity poles were uprooted.
A Central government team is currently in Andhra Pradesh to assess the losses caused by the previous cyclone.
