Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, introduced on Wednesday a FASTag-based annual pass priced at Rs 3,000 for "hassle-free highway travel."

He said the new system, which is just for non-commercial private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans, will address "long-standing concerns" about toll plazas. Gadkari stated that the FASTag-based passes will be effective on August 15 and valid for one year or 200 visits, whichever comes first, Indian Express reported.

“In a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel, we are introducing a FASTag-based Annual Pass priced at Rs. 3,000, effective from 15th August 2025. Valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips—whichever comes first—this pass is designed exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans,” said Gadkari in a post on X, PTI reported.

Passing through a toll plaza will count as one trip. He added that the annual permit will allow for "seamless and cost-effective travel" across national highways throughout the country.

According to Gadkari, a specific link for activation and renewal would soon be available on the Rajmarg Yatra App, as well as the official websites of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

“This policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60 km range and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction. By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimizing disputes at toll plazas, the Annual Pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners,” said Gadkari.

FASTag is an electronic toll-collecting system operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The FASTag sticker is frequently placed on a car's windscreen.

It communicates with toll plaza scanners via Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). When the car crosses a toll plaza, the appropriate toll amount is automatically debited from a bank account or prepaid wallet linked to the FASTag.
