FIR registered over AI-generated video targeting PM Modi and his late mother
text_fieldsDelhi Police registered an FIR on Saturday following a complaint by a BJP worker regarding an AI-generated “deepfake” video shared by the Bihar Congress unit.
The video allegedly damaged the reputation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, an official confirmed.
The complaint was filed on Friday by Sanket Gupta, convenor of the BJP’s Delhi Election Cell, at the North Avenue Police Station. Gupta accused the video of “maligning the Prime Minister’s image, grossly violating law, morality and women’s dignity.”
According to the complaint, the video was posted on the Bihar Congress unit’s official X handle on September 10. It depicted PM Modi dreaming about his late mother, who was criticising his political decisions in poll-bound Bihar.
The FIR was filed against unnamed persons under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS): 336 (Forgery), 340(2) (Forgery or use of forged electronic record), 352 (Intentional insult provoking breach of peace), 356(2) (Defamation), and 61(2) (Criminal conspiracy).
The BJP and its allies condemned the video, calling it “shameful” and questioning how far the opposition party would go to attack the prime minister.
However, the Congress defended the video. Pawan Khera, head of the party’s media and publicity department, said, “What is their objection? Just because a mother is trying to educate her son to do something right, where is the disrespect? This is neither disrespectful to the mother, whom we respect dearly, nor to the son.”
