New Delhi: The Facebook and Instagram pages of the Indian Army's Chinar Corps remain blocked for over a week now, army and intelligence sources have told NDTV.

Chinar Corps had created the social media handles to counter the misinformation and lies flowing from across the border. The Indian Army unit, which is a strategically located formation in Kashmir, also educated the locals about Army's social welfare initiatives on the platforms.

The matter has been taken up with Facebook, but no response has come yet, Defence Ministry sources said.

"A link you followed may be broken, or the page may have been removed," reads the message on both the Facebook and Instagram pages of the Chinar Corps.

It is not clear why the pages were blocked by Facebook and Instagram, owned by the same parent firm Meta.

The two social media websites remove a page if it does not follow the rules and regulations laid by the company or if people report about it.

The Chinar Corps created the Facebook and Instagram pages to counter fake news and lies being circulated on social media and to present the real ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir, sources said.

According to a government release on February 25, 2021, there were 53 crores WhatsApp users in India at that point of time, 44.8 crore YouTube users, 41 crore Facebook users, 21 crore people were subscribed to Instagram and Twitter was being used by 1.75 crores.
