Delhi stone-pelting case: Three more arrested; total held reaches 16
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Delhi Police on Saturday arrested three more individuals in connection with the violence at Turkman Gate, taking the total number of arrests in the case to sixteen. The accused, identified as Mohammad Naved, Mohammad Faiz, and Mohammad Ubaidullah, are all local residents of the Turkman Gate area.
The latest arrests follow the apprehension of two suspects on Friday as police continue to crack down on those involved in the unrest.
The violence erupted on January 7 during an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) near the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque. Authorities stated the demolition was carried out in compliance with court orders.
Tensions escalated as a large crowd gathered to protest the action, shouting slogans and attempting to breach police barricades. The situation deteriorated into violence when protesters pelted stones at security personnel, forcing the police to deploy tear gas to disperse the mob and restore order.
The investigation has widened, with police officials indicating that a summons will soon be issued to Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Mohibbullah Nadvi. The MP was reportedly present at the site shortly before the violence broke out and allegedly remained there despite repeated requests from officials to leave.
Earlier on Thursday, investigators stated they had identified at least 30 individuals involved in the rioting. Meanwhile, a Delhi court has remanded eight of the accused to judicial custody until January 21.
To prevent further flare-ups, a significant contingent of police and paramilitary forces remains deployed at sensitive locations across the area. Senior officers are actively monitoring the ground situation to ensure peace and order is maintained as the investigation continues.
