New Delhi: The Delhi Police released Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after almost six hours of detention, who was taken from the party's march from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan, IANS reported.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Amrutha Gugolth said, "They have been released," responding to a query.

It was in protest against Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) but no discussion on important issues like price rise in Parliament, the Congress MPs held the march from Parliament House to Rashtrapati Bhawan.

When the marchers moved forward to submit a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, police intervened, stopping them near Vijay Chowk.

After this, the marching parliamentarians, including Rahul Gandhi, sat in protest in front of the Vijay Chowk, holding placards and raising slogans against ED and the Centre.

Heavy police troops were deployed at the site, including paramilitary and Rapid Action Force. At first, the police began detaining other leaders, including women MPs, and at last, Deepender Singh Hooda and Rahul Gandhi were left on the spot. The women were dragged by the police and bundled in a bus.

Rahul had said to a police official, "What is the problem? We want to go there to meet the President and hand over the memorandum. Why are we not allowed?"

He was detained only in the end after removing all the other leaders. They were taken to a new police line, Kingsway Police camp.

Apart from Vijay Chowk, hundreds of party workers were also detained from outside the Congress party headquarters at 24 Akbar Road.
