New Delhi: The United Christian Forum (UCF) has reported a sharp increase in crimes against Christians in the country. Since 2014, there has been a huge increase in atrocities against the community every year. When the UCF helpline received 127 complaints of the kind in 2014, 745 complaints were received till November this year.

In a press release, the organisation said that the atrocities in Manipur have not been included in these figures when it is estimated that more than 200 Christian churches have been destroyed in Manipur this year.

The Modi government, which sent the Foreign Secretary to discuss the atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh, should not turn a blind eye to the atrocities against minorities in India, UCF said. The organisation also demanded the formation of a secretary-level committee to study the issue.

According to a report by the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), the police have been found to be complicit in most of the attacks on Christians. The constitutional rights of Christians are also being violated. The reservation for Anglo-Indian representatives, which had ensured representation for the Christian community in Parliament and state assemblies, has been abolished. There has been no representation of the community in the National Commission for Minorities and the Minority Education Commission for the last five years.

The vacancies of Christian representatives in the state minority commissions are also not being filled in a timely manner. The Supreme Court heard the preliminary arguments in 2022 on a petition seeking action against organised attacks on Christians in the country, but there has been no hearing since then.

So far, 12 states in the country have enacted politically motivated anti-conversion laws. The Supreme Court observed that the Uttar Pradesh government's amendment bill to its anti-conversion law included measures similar to UAPA and against Article 25 of the Constitution. Article 25 guarantees religious freedom.

In its press release, UCF demanded that the government intervene positively to ensure justice for citizens.
