Left parties in India have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to take part in US President Donald Trump’s proposed ‘Board of Peace’ for Gaza, an initiative projected as a reconstruction mechanism, as they argue that it is designed to incapacitate the United Nations, embody US power over other nations, and convert Gaza into a profit-making enterprise rather than a platform for genuine peace efforts.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, and the CPI(ML)-Liberation have jointly criticised the proposal, contending that the suggested board would undermine multilateral institutions while advancing a power-centric global order led by Washington, with India’s participation seen as lending legitimacy to such an approach.

They have cautioned that any framework operating outside the UN risks weakening international law and eroding the principles of collective decision-making that India has historically supported.

CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby said the proposed body appeared less concerned with rebuilding war-ravaged Gaza and more focused on exploiting the destruction of the Palestinian homeland for economic gain, while he also pointed out that the peace plan offered no clarity on ending Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

He maintained that India, given its anti-colonial legacy, should continue to stand with the Palestinian people rather than align with initiatives that bypass established international norms.

The CPI echoed these concerns, with Rajya Sabha MP P. Santhosh Kumar arguing that the US president had no mandate to act as a global arbiter of peace or to impose political agendas under the guise of reconstruction.

He stressed that India should resist pressure from powerful nations, including economic coercion, and protect a fair, rules-based international system rooted in principles of sovereignty and equality among states, warning that participation would signal acquiescence to an authoritarian and transactional approach to global politics.

The CPI(ML)-Liberation issued a separate statement opposing what it described as a US-led ‘Board of Peace for Gaza’, alleging that it was being positioned as a substitute for the United Nations and would centralise authority in the hands of President Trump.

The party said the initiative marked a departure from earlier multilateral understandings and instead reflected an attempt to impose a new power-driven global order, citing recent US actions elsewhere as examples of how such concentration of power could translate into political subjugation and denial of sovereignty.

Referring to the situation in Gaza, the CPI(ML)-Liberation said that despite a ceasefire announced in October 2025, Israel, backed by the US and Western powers, continued daily military actions, infrastructure destruction, and policies that amounted to collective punishment of the Palestinian population.

It accused the Modi government of abandoning India’s long-standing solidarity with oppressed peoples by moving closer to the US and Israel, describing such alignment as a betrayal of India’s historic foreign policy principles.
