Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangaswamy on Monday assured that his government was committed to the cause of farmers. The CM was responding to questions posed by the opposition DMK and other independent members in the assembly.

When asked about the plight of farmers in the union territory, the CM said he was aware of the troubles they face, including the damage to crops during the rains and stormy weather. The opposition further called upon the government to speed up the crop insurance scheme for farmers. The opposition also demanded that the government hold talks with the union government.

Agriculture Minister C Djeacour further informed members that he had sought a report from the Department of Agriculture on the total number of farmers who had applied for crop insurance. PWD Minister K Lakshminarayan also informed that the tourism sector was contributing largely to the exchequer. Furthermore, the assembly passed the Puducherry Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill.
