CJP volunteer Junaid moves SC, alleges illegal detention, family harassment

New Delhi: Mohammad Junaid, who worked as a food volunteer during the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) student protests against the alleged NEET paper leak, has approached the Supreme Court, alleging that he was illegally detained and harassed by police and that his family members were subjected to coercive action without following due legal procedure.
In his plea, Junaid alleged that Delhi Police officials picked him up around midnight on July 24 while he was returning from Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital after receiving an anti-rabies injection. He claimed he was kept inside a police vehicle for nearly five to six hours, during which he was threatened and intimidated.
Junaid further alleged that police forcibly took his mobile phone and searched it after making him unlock the device. He claimed he was repeatedly questioned about who was funding him and the source of the money used to purchase food supplies for protesters during the agitation.
According to his plea, Junaid was eventually dropped at a remote location on Dehradun Road after the five-to-six-hour ordeal. He then had to hire a cab from Dehradun to return to Delhi, he alleged.
Junaid has also alleged that Ghaziabad Police detained his father and searched his residence, during which several household items were damaged. According to the plea, police later visited the Meerut residence of his married sister and took away her father-in-law and brother-in-law. Both were subsequently released, he claimed.
The petition contends that none of the alleged actions, including the detentions, raids or search of his mobile phone, was supported by any paperwork or carried out in accordance with the procedure prescribed under law.
Junaid has sought directions from the Supreme Court restraining police from taking any further coercive action against his family members. He has also urged the court to ensure that any investigation involving him or his family is conducted strictly in accordance with the law.
According to a LiveLaw report, Junaid's plea has been filed as an application in a pending writ petition moved by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Kumar Jha, seeking action over alleged police violence during the CJP protests.
