CJP leaders Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka to be produced before Magistrate today
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka are expected to appear before a Special Executive Magistrate in Delhi on Monday as their five-day judicial custody in a case linked to the Jantar Mantar protest site comes to an end.
The two leaders are scheduled to be produced at 2 pm, according to CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh, who expressed hope that the proceedings would not face further delays.
Das and Ranka were remanded to custody on October 14 after being arrested a day earlier for allegedly trespassing at Jantar Mantar, which has been removed from the list of designated protest venues. They were among 14 people detained during the incident, which also involved allegations of obstructing police personnel.
Delhi Police had justified the custody order by citing concerns that the accused could repeat alleged violations or encourage others to do so if released. Another CJP member, Ajinkya Shinde, was released on a personal bond with conditions to maintain peace and good behaviour for six months.
The party members had gathered to protest alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and raise slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
CJP lawyer Abhisht Hela had challenged the custody order, alleging that authorities failed to follow Supreme Court guidelines.
Delhi Police has designated Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi as alternative venues for protests following the removal of Jantar Mantar from the approved list.
