CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das detained at Jantar Mantar
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Delhi Police detained Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, along with several other protesters, during a demonstration at Jantar Mantar against alleged electoral irregularities. The action came a day after the INDIA bloc’s march to the Supreme Court opposing the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Videos shared by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke showed party volunteers climbing over an iron gate and police barricades to enter the protest site, carrying flags and raising slogans. Police personnel chased the protesters and attempted to stop them before detaining the group.
Separately, Delhi Police registered four FIRs in connection with Monday’s INDIA bloc march. The cases were lodged at Connaught Place, Tilak Marg, Mandir Marg and Barakhamba police stations for alleged violations of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Two cases were registered at Tilak Marg police station.
The march brought together opposition leaders, activists and civil society members demanding action over alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision exercise. A delegation of opposition leaders subsequently approached the Supreme Court with a joint petition challenging the SIR process.
The protest followed Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s decision not to meet opposition leaders, citing that the matter was pending before the court.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has invited INDIA bloc representatives, civil society members and student organisations to a meeting at his residence on Tuesday afternoon, with a press conference scheduled ahead of it.
