The Union Ministry of Labor aims to increase the working hours to 12 hours from 9hours. The government has left the decision for option poll.

As per the draft, the working hours of a day can be extended to 12 hours with one hour for recess. However, the draft directive states that they should employ no worker over 48 hours a week.

The decision was made after states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh had come up to amend the labour laws to increase working hours to make up for the time lost due to the Covid lockdown.

The central government has given the public 45 days to comment on the draft proposal.
