Representational.

New Delhi: A BJP MP has presented a private bill seeking the abolishment of the Waqf Act of 1995. The bill was introduced after a division of votes and strong protests from the opposition parties, PTI reported.

BJP leader Harnath Singh Yadav introduced the Waqf Repeal Bill 2022, which was vehemently opposed by members of several parties, including the Congress, TMC, DMK, CPI, CPI (M), and RJD, and led to a division of votes.

However, the introduction of the bill was approved after 53 members, mostly from the treasury benches, voted in favour against 32.

Mr Yadav later introduced the bill that will be taken up for discussion later.

Meanwhile, Congress MP from Kerala Jebi Methar demanded at the House that the Centre must not interfere with the religion. Protesting the introduction of the repeal bill by the BJP leader, she asked why the BJP and the Centre are butting into such religious affairs of Muslims.

JB Mather accused the BJP of destroying religious coexistence in the country. The introduction of the is meant to destroy the moral values and religious balance that the country has followed for so long, she said. All religions have their own way of working. Even as the central government claims maximum governance and minimal interference, it is creating chaos by intruding into religious issues through such bills. JB Mather warned that this would lead to hate clashes.

Harnath Singh Yadav, who introduced the bill to repeal the Waqf Act in the afternoon, also called for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code during the Zero Hour in the morning to give rise to protests from the Opposition.
