New Delhi: Welcoming the Supreme Court's decision to put the sedition law on hold, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh alleged that BJP was employing the law to suppress dissent against the NDA led Centre, PTI reported.

Spokesperson to AAP, Singh, wrote on Twitter that the law was misused against him in Uttar Pradesh.

"The SC's decision is welcome. Whosoever tries to raise a voice against the BJP government, the BJP brings false cases to suppress such person. This law was misused against me also in Uttar Pradesh," he said.

"The BJP saves the real goons. Instead of saving the law, the BJP is engaged in saving loafers and goons," he added.

On Wednesday, the top court put the law on hold for the time being and stayed the registration of FIRs charging with the law as well as ongoing probes and coercive measures charging the same until an appropriate forum re-examines the colonial-era law.

Singh was named in an FIR in September 2020, charged with the 124 (A) of IPC and various sections of the IPC, including 501A (printing or engraving matter knowing it to be defamatory), 120 (a) (conspiracy) and IT Act at Hazratganj police station. But, Singh stated that the sedition charge was a reaction to his work on exposing UP's Adityanath government's corruption.
