The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive mandate in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, winning 191 seats and leading in 16 others in the 294-member Assembly, according to the latest counting trends.

The ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) suffered a major setback, winning 67 seats and leading in 13 constituencies.

Parties including the Congress, Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), CPI(M), and AISF also managed to open their accounts.

The most high-profile result of the election came from the Bhabanipur constituency, where BJP heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by more than 15,000 votes after a closely watched contest.

Following the defeat, Mamata Banerjee alleged irregularities at the counting centre. She claimed CCTV cameras were switched off and Trinamool Congress agents were assaulted and denied entry into the counting venue after 3 pm.

The Congress opened its account in West Bengal after drawing a blank in the 2021 Assembly elections. The party won the Farakka constituency, where Motab Shaikh defeated BJP candidate Sunil Chowdhuri by 8,193 votes. Shaikh secured 63,050 votes, while the Trinamool Congress candidate Amirul Islam finished third with 47,256 votes.

Congress was also leading in Raninagar, where candidate Julfikar Ali maintained a lead of 4,182 votes after the 14th round of counting.

The BJP recorded several major victories across the state. Gouri Sankar Ghosh won the Murshidabad constituency with 1,14,443 votes, defeating TMC’s Shaoni Singha Roy by a margin of 31,521 votes.

Among the BJP’s biggest victories, Kshudiram Tudu won Ranibandh by 52,269 votes, while Agnimitra Paul secured Asansol Dakshin with a margin of 40,839 votes. Sankar Kumar Guchhait won Medinipur by 38,747 votes, and Chandana Bauri registered a victory margin of 32,135 votes in Saltora.

Other notable BJP winners included Bharat Kumar Chettri in Kalimpong, Noman Rai in Darjeeling, Sukhen Kumar Bagdi in Burwan, Santanu Dey in Nakashipara, Kalyan Chakraborti in Khardaha, and Partha Ghosh in Raniganj.

The Trinamool Congress managed to retain a number of constituencies despite the broader BJP surge. Abdul Khaleque Molla secured one of the party’s biggest wins in Metiaburuz with a massive margin of 87,879 votes.

Sabina Yeasmin won Sujapur by 60,287 votes, while Reyat Hossain Sarkar secured Bhagawangola by 56,407 votes. Mustafijur Rahaman (Suman) won Bharatpur by 30,753 votes, and Anisur Rahaman Bidesh emerged victorious in Deganga by 17,818 votes.

With counting nearing completion in most constituencies, the results pointed to a historic breakthrough for the BJP in West Bengal, ending the Trinamool Congress’ dominance in the state and marking one of the party’s biggest electoral victories in eastern India.
