BJP leaders hail UP Cabinet’s decision to rehabilitate Hindu refugees from Bangladesh
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Senior BJP leaders on Friday praised the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet’s approval for permanently rehabilitating 99 Hindu Bengali families displaced from what was once East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, describing the move as a humanitarian necessity rooted in national interest.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal welcomed Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s initiative, emphasizing that “if there is any country for Hindus, it is Hindustan” and questioning where else these refugees could find shelter. Union Minister Giriraj Singh echoed this sentiment, recalling past opposition to granting citizenship to Hindu migrants from Pakistan and asking, “Which country in the world can these Hindus go to and find shelter?”
The Cabinet cleared the proposal on Thursday to resettle the families, who have lived for decades on land designated for a lake in Nangla Gosai village, Mawana tehsil, Meerut district—considered illegal occupancy due to the lack of a formal policy. To address environmental and legal issues, the state will relocate them to Rasulabad tehsil in Kanpur Dehat district, providing land and facilities for permanent housing. Officials expect the process to begin soon.
Party leaders framed the decision as fulfilling a long-overdue ideological commitment to protect Hindu refugees, especially timely ahead of West Bengal’s Assembly elections where citizenship and rehabilitation remain flashpoints.
