Biden reminds Modi: Commitment to democratic values is the bedrock of relationship

New Delhi: On the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi labelled protesting farmers and their supporters as "Andolan Jeevi" and "parasites", the US president Joe Biden reminded the Indian leader the significance of democratic values.

PTI had reported that the two leaders talked on Monday and discussed a host of regional issues and their shared priorities.

According to a read out statement released by US administration, the US president underscored his desire to defend democratic institutions and norms around the world and noted that a shared commitment to democratic values is the bedrock for US-India relationship.

During their talk, both the leaders reiterated their commitment to work closely together to win the fight against the COVID 19 pandemic, renew their partnership on climate change, rebuild the global economy and stand together against the scourge of global terrorism.

The leaders also expressed their resolve to uphold the rule of law and the democratic process in Myanmar, where the military toppled the democratically elected government.

Narendra Modi, while speaking at Rajya Sabha had termed those supporting the farmers protests as "Andolan Jeevi" and called upon the country men to be alert about "Foreign Destructive Ideology".

Meanwhile, the Prime Ministers remarks are apparently backfiring as critics drew parallels between the remarks and Hitler's statement.

Hitler had described the Jews in Germany as parasites living off others or as harmful bacteria (noxious bacillus).

The protesting farmers on Monday had handed the PM a lesson in history by reminding that It was Andolans that have liberated India from colonial rulers. The farmers' collective, SKM also said that the BJP and its predecessors that had never done any Andolan against the Britishers and they were always against Andolans.
