Assault, caste abuse complaint at Jamia; Delhi Police begin probe

New Delhi: Delhi Police have initiated an investigation into allegations of verbal and physical assault against an employee of Jamia Millia Islamia’s Polytechnic by a faculty member, officials said on Tuesday, while categorically ruling out any claim of religious conversion linked to the incident.
According to the police, a complaint was lodged on Monday by an employee of the institute, located in southeast Delhi’s Okhla area, against an associate professor from the Civil Engineering department. The complainant alleged that on January 13, the faculty member approached his desk, used objectionable language and behaved violently towards him.
“Legal proceedings are underway in accordance with the law. Statements are being recorded and evidence is being collected,” police said in a statement, adding that the matter remains under active investigation.
The police also dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting a religious conversion angle to the incident. “It is strictly clarified that the complainant has made no allegation regarding any attempt at forceful religious conversion. Such reports are factually incorrect and baseless,” the statement said.
Urging restraint, the police appealed to the media and the public not to circulate unverified information that could disturb communal harmony.
Police sources further said that the complainant is an upper division clerk working in the Polytechnic department.
