Guwahati: The Assam government announced the formation of a 'State OBC Commission', and it will be burdened to take a decision on subcategorisation for various tribes within the reservation limit of Other Backward Classes (OBC), PTI reported.

BJP MLA Rupesh Gowala's question was answered by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu that there is no separate reservation for tea tribes in educational institutions, and they are now under the OBC category.

Since the OBC reservation is 27 per cent, the government is considering a sub-categorisation and reservation for different OBC tribes within in existing allocation, the minister said.

He further said that at present, only the Dibrugarh University provides reservation in eight seats for students from the tea tribes for higher studies in art, commerce and science streams. "There is no such direct reservation for tea community students in other universities of the state," he added.
