Assam and Mizoram to form a committee to resolve border dispute

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met to form a solution to the border dispute between the states. They decided to form a regional committee to resolve the long-standing conflict.

The first meeting on the matter was held in November 2021 in the presence of union minister Amit Shah. Today's meeting was bilateral. And the next round is scheduled to be held next month in Guwahati.

In July 2021, the dispute took a violent turn and led to the death of six policemen and a civilian. Around 60 people were injured when two states exchanged fire.

Assam and Mizoram share a 164-km-long border.

The North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971 defines the boundary between Assam and Mizoram in independent India based on the 1933 notification. Mizoram was carved out to be a union territory out of Assam. It became a state in 1987. While the border was initially accepted by Mizoram, the dispute started following encroachment. There have been skirmishes since the 1980s.

Assam has border disputes with Meghalaya and Nagaland as well.
