Aligarh: Final-year engineering students at AMU's Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET) allege the proctorial team detained and manhandled several peers during protests against being barred from semester exams over low attendance.

After a week without response to their pleas for relaxation, students blocked roads briefly, boycotted mid-semester tests, and staged a roadside sit-in.

Protesters claim four to five were grabbed and dragged, with videos circulating online.

Detainees were freed after two hours, but the Proctor’s Office issued show-cause notices accusing them of locking ZHCET gates and NL Block on February 23, blocking exams, raising derogatory slogans, and creating a nuisance—"gross indiscipline" under the AMU Students’ Conduct and Discipline Rules, 1985. Students must explain within 24 hours or face action.

Students insist the action was peaceful, solely seeking academic relief at this critical degree stage.
