Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh: Two teachers at a government college in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district have been booked under the state’s anti-conversion law following allegations that they attempted to influence a minor Hindu student to embrace Islam, according to a report by The Indian Express.

The case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the father of a Class 10 student, who reportedly approached the police after observing what he described as significant changes in his daughter’s behaviour over the past several months. During discussions with his family, the student allegedly claimed that she had been facing sustained pressure from two female teachers at her college to change her religion and participate in Islamic religious practices.

According to police officials cited by The Indian Express, the girl further alleged that the teachers subjected her to continuous mental harassment and encouraged her to read Urdu literature related to Islam. She also claimed that she was repeatedly urged to take part in Islamic prayers and religious activities.

The complaint additionally alleged that the teachers frequently portrayed Hinduism in a negative manner while presenting Islam favourably. Based on these allegations, police registered a First Information Report against the two teachers as well as several unidentified persons.

The case has been filed under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to criminal intimidation and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.

Police officials have stressed that the allegations remain under investigation. Kaushambi Circle Officer Satyendra Prasad Tewari told The Indian Express that an inquiry is currently underway to verify the claims made in the complaint. No arrests have been made so far, and authorities said further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
