Aligarh/UP: Authorities at Aligarh Muslim University on Saturday forced stop a group of students who assembled on campus to discuss the legal, constitutional and sociological implications of the Supreme Court's 2019 judgment in the Babri Masjid case, according to a PTI report.

The programme -- "Reading the Babri Verdict" -- was organised by the Students' Collective, and coincided with the 33rd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition.

A spokesperson of the Students' Collective told reporters that the event, planned as an "academic exercise" on the lawn before the Arts Faculty, was stopped by university officials.

He said the organisers had applied for permission, but it was denied "without any reason".

Aligarh Muslim University Proctor Prof Mohammad Wasim rejected the allegations and claimed that no prior permission was sought.

A social media post announcing the discussion was circulated on Thursday "without any attribution," prompting the university to take note, he told reporters.

According to Prof Wasim, the call for participation in the discussion received little response from students, and the proctorial staff visited the venue in the afternoon to ensure that normalcy was maintained on the campus.

Meanwhile, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday took exception to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent comments in Ayodhya that centuries-old wounds were healing. He pointed out that the Supreme Court in its judgment had said there is no evidence that the Babri mosque was erected after demolishing any temple, PTI reported.

"Prime Minister said wounds of 500 years are being healed. The question is that the Supreme Court, in its judgment, said there is no evidence that the mosque was erected after demolishing any temple, then on what basis is the PM speaking like this? What wounds he is talking about," Owaisi said, speaking at an event here.

The wound is that on December 6, 1992, the "Babri mosque was made shaheed (martyr)" and that the Constitution and rule of law were weakened, he said.
