Air India initiates mandatory drug testing for group pilots following Phuket turbulence incident

Air India has introduced mandatory drug and medication screening for all pilots across the group in a bid to bolster safety standards and reinforce passenger trust.

The initiative follows a recent incident involving an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi, which experienced a sudden loss of altitude. It was subsequently revealed that the pilot in command was taking medication for sleep difficulties.

According to an internal communication issued to pilots on Thursday, 13 August, the testing programme covers all group pilots and extends beyond existing regulatory requirements prescribed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The Tata Group-owned carrier stated that while it already complies with DGCA norms, which align with major international aviation standards in Europe and the United States, it chose to implement a full screening to ensure no prohibited substances or medications are being used.

The airline noted that maintaining public confidence remains a top priority and highlighted that many pilots had expressed similar sentiments regarding safety.

Screening will be compulsory and carried out during training sessions at the airline's Gurugram Academy, at Flight Briefing Centres post-flight, at Air India offices, and at designated locations across operating bases. Pilots seeking further clarification have been advised to contact their respective chief pilots or base managers.
