Mumbai: The fingerprints collected from Saif Ali Khan's residence after the knife attack do not match the fingerprints of the accused in the case, Shariful Islam, NDTV reported.

Police sent the 19 sets of fingerprints collected from Khan's residence to the fingerprint bureau of the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Now a system-generated report has established that the prints do not match Shariful's, setting a potential twist in the case.

Mumbai Police has sent more samples for further testing after the CID informed the Mumbai Police that the test result is negative.

Breaking into his house, an intruder attacked the 54-year-old on January 15.

The intruder knifed the actor several times with one coming dangerously close to his spinal cord, causing spinal fluid to leak.

After the intruder escaped, Khan was rushed to Lilavati Hospital with serious injuries.

He was released from hospital on Tuesday and was advised bed rest for a week.

The accused, Shariful, is an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh, told police that someone promised to arrange fake citizenship documents for him in exchange for money, hence he attempted burglary at Khan’s home.

Police are now looking for the person who promised to get Shariful's documents made.

Meanwhile, police are trying to gather more evidence to build a bulletproof case against Shariful who was arrested based on CCTV footage.
