Kolkata: Clashes erupted between Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Left wing Democratic Students’ Organisation (DSO) near the College Street campus of Calcutta University, leaving several students injured, university and police officials said.

DSO state secretary Biswajit Roy alleged that ABVP activists attacked its members on Tuesday after the assembly election results were declared on Monday, claiming his cadres were trying to “protect the democratic atmosphere” of the campus. He accused ABVP supporters of tearing down banners and festoons.

ABVP, however, denied the charges and said its members were attacked by DSO activists while they were peacefully celebrating the election outcome, with several of its supporters sustaining injuries.

DSO said one of its activists suffered a head injury and was admitted to hospital, while five others were also assaulted. A university official stated that no clash took place inside the campus. A senior police officer confirmed a brief scuffle near the university gate, adding that security personnel quickly intervened and police persuaded both groups to disperse.
