New Delhi: AAP candidate Shelly Oberoi emerged as winner in the Mayoral polls garnering 150 votes.

The BJP candidate Rekha Gupta who ran for the coveted position managed to pull off 116 votes, despite the party’s pitched efforts.

Shelly Oberoi, who joined AAP in 2013 beginning as an activist, holds PhD in management studies from IGNOU’s school of Management Studies, according to NDTV.

Alongside being a lifetime member of Indian Commerce Association, she taught at universities including NMIMS, IP and IGNOU.

Reacting to the win, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia congratulated Oberoi on Twitter adding that “ the goons have lost, people have won’.

“I congratulate all workers on the election of an AAP mayor and thank the people of Delhi once again. Many congratulations to Shelly Oberoi, AAP’s first mayor.” Sisodia further said.

Amid prolonged tussle between the BJP and AAP, Mayor Election were put off thrice.

Shelly Oberoi questioned in the top court the BJP's contention of allowing the aldermen -- 10 members nominated by the Lieutenant Governor -- to vote in the election.

Later a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud made it clear that nominated members cannot go for election, adding that the Constitutional provision is very clear about it.

In the first municipal election held after merger of the MCD, AAP bagged 134 of 250 wards, ending the BJP rule of 15 years.
