A Delhi Court has granted permission to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh, who has been in jail for over five months after being arrested in the Delhi excise policy case, to attend Parliament on Tuesday to take oath as a Rajya Sabha member.

Special Judge M K Nagpal, presiding over the case, directed the authorities at Tihar jail to ensure adequate security for Singh's appearance in Parliament. Additionally, strict measures were put in place, barring Singh from using his phone or communicating with other accused individuals during his visit.

Singh, who was recently elected for a second term to the Rajya Sabha, had previously been denied summons to take oath due to his legal entanglement in the excise policy case.

The controversy surrounding Singh stems from his arrest on October 4, 2023, following extensive searches at his North Avenue residence. He becomes the third AAP leader implicated in the case, following former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and the party's communications in-charge Vijay Nair.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleges that Singh, described as a "key conspirator," received Rs 2 crore in cash from businessman Dinesh Arora, who later turned approver in the excise case. The ED further claims that Singh manipulated the liquor policy through Sisodia to benefit specific businessmen, thereby generating illicit proceeds.

According to the ED's remand application, Singh is accused of exploiting his position for personal gain, having close ties with Arora since 2017, as evidenced by call records and statements from the businessman turned approver.
