Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Police have booked nearly 60 people on charges of rioting and unlawful assembly for allegedly attacking participants in an AIMIM rally and throwing eggs at police personnel in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, officials said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Jinsi area, where former Member of Parliament Imtiaz Jaleel was leading a foot march to campaign for AIMIM candidates contesting the upcoming civic elections. A confrontation broke out between AIMIM supporters and a group backing a rival candidate, police said.

According to officials, members of the rival group allegedly attempted to attack the vehicle of AIMIM leader Imtiaz Jaleel during the march. Police intervened and used appropriate force to disperse the crowd, appealing to those gathered to return home.

Despite the police intervention, some individuals allegedly hurled eggs at police personnel during the unrest, an official said.

Following the incident, a case was registered at the Jinsi police station against 13 identified persons and 40 to 50 unidentified individuals. The accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Police Act for rioting, unlawful assembly and other related offences, police added.
