56 Indian travellers treated ‘like cattle’ in Georgia: Tourist alleges
text_fieldsNew Delhi: A woman has alleged that Georgian authorities detained a group of 56 Indian travellers treating them ‘like criminals’ at the Sadakhlo border.
Sadakhlo border is the primary land crossing between Armenia and Georgia.
Dhruvee Patel shared her experience on Instagram saying the group was attempting to enter the country from Armenia when authorities detained them, NDTV reported.
Despite carrying valid e-visas, the group, according to her post, was held more than 5 hours in the ‘freezing cold – no food, no toilet.’
Officials confiscated their passport for two hours alongside forcing them to sit on the footpath ‘like cattle’.
While treating them ‘like criminals’, the officials stopped the group from filming the incident.
The officials did not check documents but termed the visas ‘ wrong’, which according to Dhruvee Patel was ‘shameful & unacceptable’.
Tagging PM Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Patel said that ‘India must take a strong stand’.
Responding to Patel’s post, one person commented ‘Sorry to hear that. Also this isn't the first post I've seen of Georgia. It's been bad and happening for a long time now’.
Another user wondered why Indians wanted to visit the country when they were consistently treated so in Georgia.
One user pointed out that ‘There have been consistent reports of racial profiling by the Georgian government’.
A person who had visited Georgia in 2019 said for the last many years ‘they are creating problems for Indians, that's a sad story’.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not yet responded to the post.
