New Delhi: Four people died and two others sustained serious injuries after a fire engulfed a shoe manufacturing unit in Delhi's Mangolpuri Industrial Area late on Friday, prompting an hours-long rescue operation.

The blaze broke out at around 9.30 pm in the basement of a factory in Phase-I of the industrial area. Police, firefighters and emergency response teams rushed to the premises after receiving information about the incident.

Firefighters eventually managed to bring the flames under control and rescued six people trapped inside the building. All six were found unconscious and taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, where four were declared dead on arrival. The remaining two are receiving treatment.

Outer District DCP Vikram Singh said police personnel were among the first to reach the site, following which fire service teams launched the rescue operation. He added that the operation continued for an extended period.

According to Central Accident and Trauma Service personnel, five ambulances were immediately dispatched after an emergency call was received at 9.50 pm. The teams reached the factory within five to seven minutes and shifted the victims to hospital.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Preliminary information indicates that the flames originated in the basement, but officials said the exact circumstances would be determined through an investigation.

Police have initiated legal proceedings and are investigating the incident. Further details are awaited.
