Visakhapatnam: A massive fire broke out at Vishakhapatnam harbour last night burning to ashes at least 25 fishing boats.

An Indian Navy vessel and multiple fire engines were rushed to the spot to control the raging flames.

Authorities put the estimated loss at ₹ 4-5 crores as each of the boat perished in the fire cost nearly 15 lakh.

Vishakhapatnam police commissioner Ravi Shankar confirmed that the fire had started on a fishing boat late at night, NDTV reported.

‘The boat was cut off and sent adrift to ensure the fire did not spread to the others. But the winds and water flow brought it back to the jetty. Soon, the other boats were burning too,’ Ravi Shankar was quoted as saying.

The diesel containers and gas cylinders on the boats fed the fires, gutting the entire jetty area, according to the report.

While fishermen suspect foul play, it is reported that a party was happening in one of the boats.

Footages showed firefighters struggling to douse large flames.

Fishermen were seen helplessly standing by as fires charred their livelihood.

Blasts were reported from the boats as flames invaded boats’ fuel tanks, causing panic in the area.

According to senior police officer Ananda Reddy the fire had broekn out around 11:30 pm.

‘Cylinders on boats are causing blasts, so we are asking people to stay away. Fire engines are working to control the fire," he said. "The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed. No casualties have been were reported. A case has been filed and investigation is underway,’ Ananda Reddy was quoted as saying.

Police Commissioner Ravi Shankar announced a thorough probe into the incident.
