19 year old arrested under anti-conversion law; alleged concealment of personal information
text_fieldsBijnor: A man was arrested under anti-conversion law in Bijnor for attempting the forceful conversion of religion on a 14-year-old girl. Senior police official Sanjay Kumar said the girl was abducted and forced to change her religion.
"A girl from Dhampur was missing for the past few days. However, the police found both girl and the accused. After interrogation, the man was arrested for abducting and forcing a girl to convert her religion," said Sanjay Kumar.
Police said Sadiq had hidden his identity and introduced the girl as Sonu.
The case was filed on the basis of a complaint filed by the girl's father, who alleged that the youth had "lured" his minor daughter. Sadiq was arrested under the ordinance against unlawful religious conversion and the SC/ST Act.
The Prevention of Forced Conversion Ordinance was introduced in UP in November. The new legislation includes a prison sentence of one to five years for the accused, with a penalty of Rs 15,000, if convicted of carrying out forced marriage conversions.
